Your first acupuncture consultation – what will happen?

When you begin your course of acupuncture treatment, we ask you to allow 1.5 – 2 hours for your initial consultation. This time provides an opportunity for you and your acupuncturist to slow down and carefully take a 360-degree view of your health.

This will involve gathering information about your current symptoms and any treatments you’ve received so far, both your own medical history and that of your close family, also your sleep patterns, diet and digestive function, hormonal health and emotional wellbeing.

This broad picture of your health will allow us to understand the context in which your condition has arisen and, therefore, have the opportunity to address the root factors of your symptoms.

Once you are settled on the couch your practitioner will carry out a short physical examination which can include looking at your tongue, pulse taking, reading your blood pressure, gentle abdominal palpation and structural assessment.

After this process is complete you will receive your first treatment of acupuncture.
