What happens before & after your acupuncture treatment?

Before you come in for treatment . . .

Before your first acupuncture treatment appointment here are some things for you to bear in mind:

  • We recommend a ‘joined-up’ approach to your healthcare, so if you are presently receiving treatment from your doctor we suggest that you talk with him/her about your intention to begin a course of acupuncture treatment.
  • We need to know about any medication or supplements you are taking, so it is helpful if you can bring this information with you to your first appointment.
  • On the whole we ask patients to get undressed down to undergarments and lie on the treatment couch under a blanket for ease of access to acupuncture points, however, many commonly used acupuncture points are located on the lower arms and legs, so should you prefer not to get undressed it is helpful to wear clothing that allows easy access to these areas.
  • Try not to come for treatment on an empty stomach or straight after a heavy meal

And after . . .

  • It is possible that you may feel a little tired or sleepy and should take this into account if you are planning to drive any distance or use heavy machinery straight after your acupuncture treatment.
  • You should refrain from vigorous exercise directly after treatment and, ideally, give yourself a little time to rest.
  • It is advisable not to drink alcohol on the day of treatment.
  • Acupuncture has very few side effects and any that do occur is usually mild and self-correcting.
  • Please do not make adjustments to your prescription medications without first consulting your doctor.
